For most of us, racing is just a hobby. Something cool to brag about at work, a way to pass the time in our lives. Still, it's hard to beat that feeling you get when you take the perfect line, get the best start, have a great battle with a competitor. Like time, those memories fade and slip away if we let them. I still remember my first race. I almost threw up twice. My arms hurt so bad from arm pump I thought (or wished) they would fall off. Most of my memories of that event come from my fading recollection and a few disposable camera prints an old girlfriend took. Still, they are priceless.
Well, the 2009 CMRA season is finally underway! Overall the weekend saw good weather for a February in Texas. Light rain caused some havoc during the Saturday races leaving some racers wondering which way was up, but Sunday the sky's turned clear and everyone was back up to speed.
Thirty two teams showed up for the first round of the mini-endurance race. Turn two saw over thirty crashes during the race, mostly due to rain, but by the 4th hour the sun was out and the racing was hot. In the end, Defending Sarah (19) took top honors, with OnRoad Racing, KSDS, and OnTrack4Him.org winning their respective classes. The day ended with the CMRA "Race for Grumpy", a clockwise pit bike race to raise money for our friend and fellow staff member Kevin Dennis who fell ill recently. Looking more like herding cats than racing, the event was "mostly" a success with only one participant suffering a slight injury in the chaos.
On Sunday, Ty Howard walked away with the most expert wins while Alonzo Contreras, Scott Buckley, and Blake Cochran tied for most novice wins with two each. The weekend saw the return of two McDonald's, Tyler who sat out most of 2008 due to a injury and his dad Sam, who made a return to club racing nearly capturing a F40 win in the process. A third McDonald also made his debut at the CMRA event, Cooper McDonald, brother of Tyler, found his way to the "hill" getting a win in the Junior Motard ranks in the process.
It was great to see the first event so well supported during these economic times and to see the return of so many friends and racers. My hopes are high for the success of the 2009 season and all of the great action the talent in our club will offer us this year!
